“In our journey through life, we learn many small lessons that mold us, shape us, and influence how we deal with others. But once in a while something happens that seriously alters the path on which we are headed. Such lessons stick with us like glue.”
These opening lines in The Way of the Shark they are an introduction to the pivotal moments that turned Greg Norman toward the game of golf, a sport that would shape the path of his life. But more than that, it describes the essence of Greg Norman. Highly committed to success in his life, introverted by nature, he is dedicated to paying attention to and learning from both his successes and his mistakes.
Business has played as big a part in Greg Norman’s life as golf has, and a large part of the book is dedicated to his journey in building and developing his businesses. What begins as product endorsements soon becomes partnerships in products and eventually stand-alone businesses under Great White Shark Enterprises, a now-multinational umbrella of diversified businesses from golf course designs to wine labels. Norman’s gift for “starting with the end in mind” has made his transition from golf to life after golf extremely successful – a segue many professional athletes struggle with.
The Way of the Shark is an intriguing look at the man behind Great White Shark Enterprises. In true Greg Norman fashion, however, the reader does not get too far beneath the hat. While this does not deter from the story or the many lessons to be learned from this amazing and successful man, it may feel like we are still missing a piece to the puzzle of Greg Norman.
