Silvano Borruso has translated some of St. Augustine of Hippo’s most famous (as well as some lesser known) quotes as part of the ongoing Life Guide series. This short and inexpensive book is divided according to the following subjects: order; God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; human life; truth and wisdom; reward and punishment; the Church; Scripture; and virtues. The introduction gives the initials of the works from which the quotes originate. Borruso provides the Latin quote followed by his own translation. Each of the 200 quotes is usually a short sentence, though a few are a little longer.
This is a great collection of St. Augustine one-liners for spiritual and life nourishment that includes a four-page subject index. The wonderful cover image of St. Augustine and his mother St. Monica is from Ary Scheffer’s 1855 painting displayed in the Louvre Museum in Paris. This book can serve as an introduction into the reading of St. Augustine’s many works and is highly recommended.
