Elizabeth McGee, known to her friends as Betts, loves her family, her beautiful Bulls Island in the Carolina Lowcountry, and her high school sweetheart, J.D. Langley. Even though storms rage outside, Betts and J.D. are happy knowing that their families will soon sit down together to discuss J.D. and Betts’s dream wedding. What Betts now knows is that there are other storms brewing that will soon erupt and wash away all of her dreams.

J.D. Langley is the golden boy of Charleston. He comes from a wealthy family and has inherited the family business. He’s no slouch, though; he has worked to make the business one of the premier environmentally-friendly construction businesses in the south. J.D. has everything, except the one thing he really wanted.

Adrian is entering college as a freshman. He has a loving mother, many friends, and a promising future. Adrian knows that his mother has always done the best she could for him, but she has never been able to tell him about his family. For many years, Adrian was satisfied with his mother’s vague stories about accidents and unpleasantness, but now that he’s entering adulthood, he just wants to know.

Vinny is a distraction. Betts enjoys Vinny’s company because she doesn’t have to make any commitment to him, and he is not interested in making any to her. She’s not really sure when all that changed. Perhaps it was when she tried to break it off with Vinny and realized that he was a force to be reckoned with. Betts’s last plan was to return to her beloved Bull’s Island, but maybe this new job opportunity will bring a release from many of the demons that have been chasing her.
