Steven Adler, the original drummer for Guns N' Roses, has lived a life of so many ups and downs that it's almost impossible to believe it all happened. As the man who sat behind the bass drum on the songs that made up the album
Appetite For Destruction, he was responsible for playing on the biggest-selling debut album of all time. He helped to put together GNR and was responsible for finding singer Axl Rose and guitarist Slash. He opened for the Rolling Stones, traveled the world, had girls coming at him day and night, and threw it all away on heroin, crack, and cocaine.
All of those stories are here in his autobiography, an unflinchingly honest account about what happened to the little drummer boy over the course of several decades. He talks about growing up, falling in/out of love, and his drug habit.
"The doctors concluded that I did, in fact, suffer a stroke. You'd think this nightmare would be the final moronic chapter in my life. And you'd be perfectly right to assume this would scare me into cleaning up my act. You'd guess I finally suffered something so traumatic, I'd find the resolve to take better care of myself.
Guess again."
Even a stroke couldn't keep from Adler from his appointed rounds. He'd eventually clean up but not before he lost his band, all the women in his life, and any shred of decency he may have had left. It's a terribly sad story about a man who had it all and threw it all away.
