Anybody who has ever written a song must ultimately deal with singing that song in front of other people. It is not an easy thing to do. Your mind closes down, the words fly out of your head, and the faces out in the crowd turn into alligators waiting to devour the very spirit inside you.
Anika Paris's book is here to help you. While much of this is common sense, reading about it all in one place will help bring focus to the subject.
The approach outlined here follows what is inside of you. Chapter titles reveal the roadmap: "Finding You: Capturing What Is Already There"; "Using Your Chakras: Pairing the Physical and the Emotional"; and "Finding Your Fashion Muse: Shopping in Your Closet." In Chapter One, "Finding You," the author provides various exercises meant to strengthen and enlighten. They include questions like:
- If you were a season, what season would you be, and why?
- If you were a musical instrument, which one would you be, and why
- If you were a book or movie, which one would you be, and why?
A bit simplistic perhaps, but it's all meant to focus your energies. An accompanying DVD documents a master class where Paris interacts with students and applies the various concepts from her book. You need to read everything you can on becoming a better artist, and including this as one of your selections will certainly help. Bottom line: listen and learn. Write music. Write songs. Work on your singing. Pick up an instrument. If you love what you do, you'll find a way to make it work - on some level.
