But Enough About Me: A Jersey Girl's Unlikely Adventures Among the Absurdly Famous is the newest work from journalist and MTV2 VJ Jancee Dunn. In what can be considered a hybrid (part memoir and part tabloid), Jancee intertwines her own story of growing up in a quirky family with her experiences interviewing celebrities. Written with wit, charm, and sardonic humor, But Enough About Me is a fantastically entertaining read from beginning to end that delivers on both side of her story: the story of her life and tales from the trenches of celebrity journalism.
“I was leaning against a wall, waiting in the bathroom line, when a senior named Mark, a hip soccer player who wore Adidas Sambas and liked the Clash, materialized behind me. He smirked. “Holding up the wall?” he asked. Tell me what is the sharp, snappy rejoinder to “Holding up the wall?” I gawped at him as everyone in the line nudged each other, waiting for my trademark comeback. Holding up the wall. Holding up the wall. Seasons passed. The leaves outside withered, dropped, bloomed and withered again. Holding. Wall. Mark abruptly turned away from me and started chatting up another girl. Good-bye, Rat Pack, hello dinner theaters in Jupiter, Florida.”
This is just a sample of Jancee’s spunky, sassy writing style. The crawls with laugh-out-loud moments, both personal and professional. On the professional side, her advice wouldn’t be of much use to the average Joe but is entertaining, and the stories about Dolly Parton and Ben Affleck are just as good as her thoughts on how to work an interview with a metal band. Clocking in at two hundred and seventy-five pages, But Enough About Me is a quick, absorbing read chockful of fun.
