Tart-tongued authority-resistant Army Major Sean Drummond is on temporary loan to the CIA when summoned for a most unusual mission. The White House Chief of Staff and six others have been found executed, and it appears the killings have only just begun - and are just a warning. Someone has put a hundred million dollar bounty on the President’s head, and it is up to Sean and no-nonsense FBI agent Jennifer Margold to work together and solve this mystery before the unthinkable happens.
Cool Jennie, with her deep knowledge of the human psyche, is an ideal counterpoint to Sean’s acerbic astuteness. Dealing with professional and private demons, the two of them also battle a growing attraction even as the bodies pile up and terror strikes Washington, DC. As they race against time to uncover the secrets, the pivotal question this duo faces is whether this is some vast international conspiracy or a deadly personal vendetta disguised to thwart them.
Brian Haig brings back the wisecracking Sean Drummond in this latest thriller, much to the joy of his fans. Sean, with his acerbic plain-spokenness and sarcastic quips, time and again cuts through the bickering and political maneuvering that the spate of killings befalling Washington's power corridors engenders among the FBI, the CIA, the Secret Service, and all the numerous other security agencies, and thus keeps the reader entertained throughout.
Jennie, too, is intriguing and seemingly fits perfectly into the slot as Sean’s attractive new sidekick. The devious plot is more than terrific, and once again Haig proves himself a master at pulling wool over the readers’ fascinated eyes. The suspense coursing through the veins of this story doesn’t end with it. The thrill factor is boundless, as is the enlightening look Haig provides into the twisted psyche of the evil mastermind as well as others. Well-written characters, particularly that of Sean Drummond, and the overall dramatic tale render this book, and indeed this series, one not to be missed.
