"The definition of courage is action in the face of fear. By that definition, sweetness, you’re the bravest person I know." Laura Kaye is a new author that I have recently discovered, and Hard as You Can is the
seconnd book in her Hard Ink series. This series grabs you from the beginning, and
Book Two takes over where the first book in the series ended. A former Special Forces teammate, Shane, is taken
with Crystal, a waitress at a dance club that is under suspicion of being involved in the mystery the former Special Forces team is involved in.
I
loved the Crystal, who is in such an awful situation that is not at all sugar-coated for the reader. Laura Kaye paints a very vivid picture of the hard times and hard decisions Crystal has had to make to survive, to repay a debt her father left with a crime lord, and to keep her sister
(who has epilepsy) safe and healthy. Her thoughts are vivid, heartbreaking, and realistic--the reader really hopes she gets out of her situation. When Shane enters the bar where she is working, he reads as
a “knight in shining armor” kind of guy. He wants to rescue her, but he also needs information from her.
He walks a fine line between falling for her and getting information from her by putting listening devices in her apartment. The chemistry is written well, and the characters don’t get their big sex scene until page 325.
Even then, it is almost overshadowed by the tension throughout the book.
Most of the book is tension-filled with a lot of drama going on. There is a long cast of characters that the reader is learning more about, and they all have their own stories, which you feel will be told in future books. This story made me want MORE! I want to learn more about the other characters and how the main storyline is resolved. I can’t wait for the next book!
