Lacey Lancaster is recovering from her divorce and stays tucked away in her apartment with only her cat, Chloe, to keep her company, though she sometimes bumps into her handsome neighbor, Jack Walker. Except for hearing Jack arguing with the woman whom she assumes is his girlfriend, Lacey doesn’t know too much about him since she keeps to herself. One day, Lacey notices that Chloe is acting oddly. By the time Lacey realizes that Chloe is in heat, Dog—Jack’s cat—has (ahem) engaged in relations with Lacey’s cat. Indignant, Lacey confronts Jack about the plans for the two cats, informing him that he must share in the ‘parental obligations’ for Chloe and Dog’s kittens. As the two neighbors follow up, they discover that they have more in common than just a few kittens.
Though Family Affair is short and somewhat predictable, it is a sweet romance in typical Debbie Macomber style. This story about love among cats and dogs has a cute premise and some funny situations and lines, though, admittedly, the protagonists are possibly as complex as the cats. Still, if you are looking for a light, quick and uplifting romance, Family Affair will fit the bill. Four stars.
