You might know Michael Jordan as one of basketball’s greatest players, possibly one of the greatest the sport has ever produced. You might even know Michael as a minor league baseball player in the White Sox organization. Heck, you could just know him as the guy who does the Hanes commercials. But however you know Michael Jordan, you’ll come to know that he was and is an extremely driven person. And that’s what his new book is about. Driven From Within by Michael Jordan (edited by Mark Vancil) shows that his super-phenomenal success comes from the motivation within Michael, helped along and fostered by great coaches and guidance along the way.
“I came to Chicago with no expectations. None. The only pressure I felt when I went to the NBA was to prove I deserved to play on that level. And that was easy because it was a step-by-step process: playing hard everyday in practice, playing against veteran teammates, making the starting five, then playing against NBA players in games. No one knew what I was capable of scoring, and no one tried to define me by putting a number on those expectations. No one had in mind what would be acceptable for me. After the first year, the expectations came, but by then I had positive habits. I had built a foundation for my game, so it wasn’t a surprise to me. I understood that the reason I was getting attention was because of the work I had put in up to that point, not because of what I had done to meet other people expectations of me.”
Clocking in at two hundred and eight pages, Driven From Within is a very fast read. It is also loaded with pictures, everything from his days at North Carolina to his time in minor league baseball to his glory days as a Chicago Bull and many, many pictures of his sneakers. The pushing of brand Jordan is quite evident. But that’s not to take away from the core message of his tenacity and passion on the court bleeding over into his post-athlete days as a businessman. In fact the pictures in this book are so plentiful, you could almost call it a picture book, as there is literally almost a picture on every page - which is a great thing for Michael Jordan fans. Overall, Driven From Within is a quick, enjoyable read with the message that hard work pays off with the added bonus of it also being a scrapbook on Michael’s career and life.
