In the latest entry in Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series (Incubus Dreams, Guilty Pleasures) continues in the same pattern that caused this series to start losing its appeal. Though the title is Micah, it’s not at all a stand alone about Micah; a wereleopard and one of Anita’s many lovers in the Vampire universe Hamilton has created.

The audio book opens with Anita being woken up by a phone call from fellow necromancer Larry asking her to go to Philadelphia to raise a zombie for him. Said zombie, one Emmett Leroy Rose, needs to be risen to give testimony in a case. Anita takes Micah with her on the trip and this is where the story gets bogged down for nearly the entire rest of the way. Micah has rented a nice hotel for Anita and all she does is whine, complain and ponder petty thoughts. The little back-story there is given about Micah’s past (the origins of his lyncanthropy) is quickly explained through way too much dialogue. And then, of course, there is the prerequisite graphic sex scene. It is hardly erotic and Micah’s big problem is that he has is well endowed; too long and too wide. Yikes!

Okaaaayyyy.

Finally, Anita and Micah show up at this very old cemetery and Anita has to deal with a whole bunch of new powers. She can’t handle the new strength she has. This is when it got a little bit interesting as Anita performed the ceremony to raise Mr. Rose. Just when you start to get into it – poof, it’s over. Just like that. No real conclusion but there was no real plot to begin with anyway.

With that said, it is a fast book. If you want a quick read, this is it for sure. Also, if you’ve read this far into the series you will happy to know there is only one sex scene, so the sex stuff isn’t as dominating as the previous few books. To be fair, the scene at the cemetery was entertaining but it was too short and came right before the book was about done; far too late for the excitement to start. LKH fans will eat this one up anyway in and then hope that the next installlment will bring Anita back to vampire-slaying form.
