The Alpine Vengeance by Seattle native Mary Daheim continues her popular and long-running Pacific Northwest Alphabet adventure series featuring Emma Lord.
Revisiting a plot line from a previous novel (The Alpine Fury), Sheriff Milo Dodge receives a number of bizarre, anonymous letters alleging that the recently deceased Larry Peterson was wrongfully arrested and convicted of murder. Milo consults his friend Emma Lord, owner of the local paper, and the two put their heads together to try to figure out what is going on here.
Before they can dismiss the allegations as a prank, another letter suggests that
if action isn’t taken to correct this “perversion” of justice, someone in this community nestled in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains will die. Is the intended target Milo, Emma or someone else? They’ll have to get hopping to figure it out if they don’t want a bad situation to turn into a tragedy.
With 22 installments of this series now in print, the Emma Lord suspense novels have obviously withstood the test of time. There’s a good reason for that – Mary Daheim is a skilled storyteller, and her many readers appreciate that.
