This collection of essays by various scholars is the third of five volumes covering individual years of the Civil War in Virginia, here 1863. Topics include land war operations, childhood during the war, teachers of African Americans, the basis for the Hatfield and McCoys’ infamous feud, Christianity during the war, collecting materials for scrapbooks, Virginia newspapers reporting on the Gettysburg Address, and the third installment of Judith Brockenbrough McGuire’s diary.
Although the essays are penned by scholars, general readers will enjoy the material covered by them. Endnotes follow each essay, and a bibliography and index are included. Civil War enthusiasts interested in Virginia’s experience of the war will enjoy this book.
