There's nothing like special agent intrigue to make a major chick lit story a huge success. Add those totally unique characteristics of X-Men proportions, and you get a fabulous cast of characters as well as some memorably erotic love scenes that make other novels pale in comparison. For a complete grand slam, the plot has to include several very attention-grabbing storylines, edge-of-your-seat suspense, and the main protagonists can't just fall blindly in love - the simplicity would be too boring. Sydney Croft fully delivers a masterwork of paranormal romance in Unleashing the Storm.

Kira Donovan is an animal whisperer and psychic with even more unusual hidden qualities hidden. Every year she must endure a month of the heat, a time when her body needs the biggest, strongest men she can find as often as possible. The alternative: she will die. When the ACRO agency realizes ITOR is on to her, Tom Knight is sent to bring her in or kill her - either way, she's too dangerous in the hands of ITOR.

As ITOR closes in, Tom, the natural predator, takes Kira into the wilderness and away from all other possible male alternatives. As her heat drives them together, the unthinkable happens: they begin to form an emotional bond and Tom actually feels the need to protect this woman. When they reach ACRO, will all have to come to an immediate stop, else Kira will find herself in an environment far less welcoming than she could have ever imagined. Can Tom live with that? Could Kira?

Lucy Monroe, an author who has used the agent theme to perfection but without the sci-fi characteristics employed in Unleashing the Storm, is a comparable writer of note and one whom Croft fans will also enjoy. However, unlike Monroe, Sydney Croft utilizes some of the more typical “unusual gifts” often pursued by novelists - seers, psychics, etc. - as well as as additional gifts that make the agents fascinating and their battles enticing. The absolutely fantastic plot, characters, and writing bring this story to life. This isn't the same old, same old and can take some getting used to, but once you're on board, it will be hard not to be a fan for life. What a deliciously emotional, erotic, and thrilling quest.
