Everyone has been impacted by the recent downturn in the economy, whether you have lost money in the stock market, lost your job, become saddled with credit card debt, or own a home you can no longer afford. The fact that the media is blasting its audiences with stories about the dire situation and the inevitability that it will continue makes it tempting to ignore all realities and run for cover. According to financial expert Suze Orman, this is the worst possible choice you can make in 2009, and she present a down-and-dirty action plan to help place yourself in the best position to handle the challenges that are to come.

In Suze Orman's 2009 Action Plan (which can currently be downloaded free of charge on oprah.com), Orman provides a clear, concise explanation about the cause of the current economic crisis. With all of the financial jargon used on television and in the newspaper, it’s incredibly refreshing to finally have a basic understanding of the major factors that contributed to the current economic climate.

The bulk of the book focuses on an action plan for credit, retirement investing, saving, spending, real estate, paying for college, and protecting your family and yourself. She does a masterful job at providing just enough information to pinpoint the issues and the consequences of a number of a number of actions (including inaction). In addition, her specific instructions compel readers to recognize that making tough choices instead of running from decisions that seem complicated and overwhelming will prevent even tougher choices in the future. The guide is particularly useful because the organization of the chapters make it effortless to focus on the areas that are most applicable to an individual’s financial situation.

The 2009 Action Plan is designed to be (and is) a quick read that offers an overview of where we are, where we are headed, and how we can position ourselves for the ride. For those people who recognize they need to make a plan but aren’t sure where to start, the hour or so it will take to read this book is one of the best financial investments currently available.
