In Shiver, the past comes to life for a woman with painful memories. As a youth, Abby witnessed the death of her mother in a mental hospital, a death that haunts her dreams. When her ex-husband is killed in the first of a series of murders that come closer and closer to home, her memories become clearer and clearer. But is she strong enough to face the truth?
Detective Montoyo is in charge of solving the serial murders, killings that come in pairs with no apparent link between the victims. Abby is a logical suspect, since she had a fight with her ex-husband, DJ Luke Gierman right before his death. The fight was hard to miss as Luke rehashed it the next day in full detail in his role as radio shock jock for the world to hear. But Montoyo cannot believe she is guilty of Luke's death, especially since he died with a young college student. What at first appears to be a murder-suicide is quickly proven to be a double murder
- and they are only the first in the string of murders of unrelated victims. In the
story's romantic edge, Abby and Montoyo share a strong attraction for each other, but their feelings come under pressure from the past and current deaths.
Lisa Jackson writes a tightly constructed thriller that does not give up its secrets
until the final pages. The setting of Our Lady of Virtues Mental Hospital used lends the novel its suspense and atmosphere. This is the fourth book
featuring the character of Reuben Montoyo, so Jackson fans will be pleased with his latest developments.
