The Rising: Selected Scenes from the End of the World collects thirty-two short stories that were written as sequel and tie-in to Brian Keene’s previously published works including
The Rising and The City of the Dead.
Keene employs an abrupt, somewhat disturbing writing style that leaves
the reader feeling shocked and unsettled. Taking readers around the world in these stories from the U.S. to Norway to Australia,
each story is unique and shows real insight into human nature. At the end of the book, the author takes his zombie epidemic to a new and somehow more frightening level.
Delirium Books published this latest installment of Keene's zombie epidemic series in August 2008. Delirium Books is based in the
U.S. Midwest, and during the 10 years they've been around, the award-winning company has already proven themselves at providing the best entertainment for readers who love the horror fiction genre.
Keene is the author and co-author of 16 novels, seven short-story collections,
four nonfiction collections, six comic books and graphic novels, four audio books, and a play,
as well as having edited three other books. Several of his novels are slated for film or video and translation
into German. This accomplished and prolific author is not one to keep a distance from his readers – in fact, at the end of The Rising: Selected Scenes from the End of the World, he welcomes interaction via his website.
Unfortunately, neither the book itself or the publishers website have information on steps they’ve taken to embrace green publishing options or carbon offset actions that are now widely available to the industry.
Readers will definitely benefit from reading the Afterword section, where the author explains each story and shares some of the inspirations behind the
plots or people in his life who inspired some of the characters.
