Necessary Evils is an interesting story about a female protagonist, Sara, who is running from her past only to find it catching up with her one dark night. Jack, a man with his own hidden demons, with two others helps Sara out of a jam. This is a story about deciding whether to let the bad things in life overtake you or to turn and fight for what you want most - a normal life.
Necessary Evils is a good read with a convincing plot that moves along at a reasonable clip. Even the secondary characters are well-drawn and believable because they speak as people actually do. In fact, the dialogue is authentic and skillfully used, conveying emotion as well as seamlessly moving the story along. Karen Coyner keeps the suspense going without bogging the story down in too many details or glossing over too much. She has a skillful touch that comes through throughout the book. Particularly admirable is the fact that she does not give in to the temptation that most writers do and resort to formulaic clichés.
So, is this a book that you should read? If you like good fiction that weaves a mysterious story in with earthy characters and convincing imagery the answer is yes.
