In twelfth-century England, St. Jude’s Abbey is no ordinary sanctuary of prayer and
ritual. Established and endowed by Queen Eleanor, its leaders train young women
in the knightly arts. In times of trials and tribulations, these women are called upon to
protect the royal family and England.
Lady Mallory de Saint-Sebastian is called away from the abbey to protect the Queen,
whose very life has been threatened. With a Knight’s sense of obligation, Mallory is
determined not only to shield the queen but also to find the enemies threatening Eleanor.
Saxon Fitz-Juste is amazed and awed by the Queen’s latest choice of a female knight
as her newest warrior. A troubadour in Queen Eleanor’s royal “court of love,” Saxon
is ostensibly loyal to her majesty - but his true mission remains to be seen.
“She raised her eyes past Saxon’s chin, where his neatly trimmed beard
followed each severely carved line of his jaw. She had never seen anyone
other than a peasant who wore a beard, and wondered how those short
hairs would feel if she ran her finger along them.”
Saxon and Mallory, irresistibly drawn to each other, may soon discover the dangers of lust and the redemptive power of love.
“Her hands gripped his strong arms as he leaned her back onto the bed. He pressed
her into its softness, but there was nothing soft about his male body. She wrapped
her arms around his shoulders and closed her eyes to savor what could not be seen,
only felt….”
Kelley is to be congratulated for her originality, character development, and
sense of humor enabling the reader to feel themselves within the story. A well –paced
novel that is lively and entertaining.
