Epting loves pop culture--he's written 17 books with titles like The Ruby Slippers,
Madonna's Bra, Einstein's Brain, Marilyn Monroe Dyed Here,
Roadside Baseball and Led Zeppelin Crashed Here. In this outing, he shows that adoration by writing fervently about the Partridge Family, the Rolling Stones, basketball legend Elgin Baylor, Jerry Lewis and much more.
He touches on important moments in his life over the past four decades and writes about them because he was part of them. Here in his intro, he talks about who he is in random paragraphs:
Chris Epting: age 48 as this book goes to press, a work-at-home, hearth-hugging, doting dad and husband in a traditional, tight-knit, loving, god-fearing, great-discussions around-the-dinner-table-every-night family and a total product of 1970s culture: The Partridge Family, baseball cards, my lime-green Nerf football, All in the Family, concert t-shirts, my purple Schwinn Stingray bike with the banana seat, disco, punk, fade IDs, strawberry wine, black light posters ... innocence that maybe wasn't so innocent. Do you remember?
This is (a) collection of stories, essays, previously published articles I'm proud of and meditations on life, all through the eys of a pop culture
junkie: Me. I entered this world wide-eyed and woefully impressionable and I remain that way today, still putty in the hands of the music, movies, books, television (thought not so much TV anymore) and other cultural influences that I sometimes become a slave to. ....I've had the good fortune to stumble into many situations that have let me experience some of my influences firsthand. I learned early in life to keep my eyes open, because you never know who or what you might miss, and that instinct has, as you'll see in this book, paid off.
Run-on sentences aside, Epting is a real fan of everything he writes about. This
is a fun ride; for those of you who haven't shot hoops with Elgin Baylor or bumped into Alfred Hitchcock's stomach, the author has--and he's dying to tell you about it.
