This Penguin Classic Faust, Part I is a 2005 translation of Goethe’s masterpiece first published in 1808. The story of Dr. Faust, who was so dissatisfied with his life that he made a blood bargain with the Devil, is just as relevant now (if not more so in this age of the end justifying the means) as when it was first published. It is a cautionary tale of being so lazy that you take the easy way out only to find out that in the end, there is no easy way out.

Faust is brilliant - after all, it is Goethe - and David Constantine offers a more approachable yet more accurate translation.
