“Never alive until age twenty-five”
Lance Scott, designer of websites, is in his mid-twenties and believes this will be the year he finds true *love*. Set in Portland, Oregon in 1999, Lance is obsessed with music, his cat, and his quest for love. Lance, who throughout adolescence had overly romantic notions of love that stayed with him into adulthood, notions that often leave him in awkward situations. We follow Lance through three relationships, marking the social foibles he commits. All the while, trying to make his fantasies fit into reality. Lance painfully realizes reality rarely meets up to his expectations.
Lance, who has connections within the world of pop-culture, spends much time in sometimes sleazy, always smoky bars with live bands. It is in this atmosphere that he seeks acceptance and companionship.
Rich’s honest and tender prose about the complications of relationships is clever and engaging. We become friends with this zany, funny young man. Do not be deceived by the comic book-looking cover - this is definitely a read for adults only.
