Jake Carlson is a top news correspondent for the TV news show “American Outrage.” He is struggling to stay focused on his career; the recent death of his wife has left his job security in a state not exactly stable. He is called away to his attend to his son, Sam, who has once again been suspended from school. Sam, depressed and not fitting in, asks him to use his journalistic expertise to find his birth mother. Against the school psychologist’s recommendation, Jake agrees to see what he can find out.
What Jake soon discovers is a whole lot more than he bargained for. The Albanian adoption agency they got Sam from not only doesn’t exist anymore - there is no evidence that it ever existed. At least that’s how it appears on the surface. Once Jake begins to dig deeper, he finds himself in an underworld of illegal activity most people aren’t even aware exists. His journalistic side feels the cry of a career-making story, but as a father he must look out first and foremost for the needs of his son.
Sam becomes involved in unraveling the mystery before Jake has a good understanding of the type of people he’s dealing with. By the time Jake and Sam’s lives are endangered, it is too late to turn back.
