Hair spray. Extensions. Teased coiffures. Tight leather pants. And this is just what the
male hair metal rockers wore in the MTV '80s. It was a decade when bands like Poison, Motley Crue, Y&T, Cinderella and Faster Pussycat were all over television, prancing around in custom-made leather outfits and shaking wild manes of hair that made Farrah Fawcett's
'do seem tame.
This is a graphically wonderful representation of a genre of music known as hair metal (pretty self-explanatory), when the look had as much to do with the presentation as the music did. In some cases, even more.
Steven Blush has gathered some terrific images by talented photographers of the era. There are bio shots, live pictures, and just an excellent assortment of images presented here. Accompanying the shots are brief biographies detailing where the band originated, who was in the band, and an engaging bit called "Fascinating Facts."
Anybody who was part of this follicle freak-out period will recognize the bands here. Anyone who wasn't involved will come away with a real feel of what those players looked like. The music may not have been very pretty - but the guys who played it sure were.
